BLYVOORUITZICHT BUS ACCIDENT UPDATE

DRDGOLD Limited said this afternoon that the latest reconciliation of casualty figures from this mornings bus accident at its Blyvooruitzicht mine near Carletonville indicate that 26 injured people were taken to various hospitals in the region.

DRDGOLD Limited said this afternoon that the latest reconciliation of casualty figures from this mornings bus accident at its Blyvooruitzicht mine near Carletonville indicate that 26 injured people were taken to various hospitals in the region.

Thorough checks are continuing to ensure that all passengers have been accounted for.

Of the 26 injured, six are in intensive care with serious injuries; another 11 have been admitted to hospital for treatment; and nine have been discharged after receiving treatment.

The injured were taken by various emergency service ambulances to hospitals in Carletonville, Potchefstroom, Krugersdorp, Randfontein and Johannesburg.

Seven people died at the scene of this mornings accident and an eighth died soon after admission to a local hospital.

The accident occurred at about 04:30 this morning while workers were being transported in a bus owned and operated by a transport company under contract to the mine from the mines hostel to its No 4 Shaft for the start of the day shift.

The cause of the accident is under police investigation.

DRDGOLD has welcomed a statement to media by Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele that a team from the Road Traffic Management Corporation will assist with the accident investigation and that the Road Accident Fund will help with support to the affected families.
